Sometimes, it just happens.  Your house is in tip-top shape and then just one day – BAM!  Water drips from your ceiling, your house starts to warm up faster than usual, or worse, flies and other small insects descend in droves indoors.

You may not realize it but your roof might have been damaged already even though you didn’t see any substantial, visible signs of damage on it.  For most homeowners, waiting for something disastrous is the telltale sign to replace their roof, but we highly suggest avoiding that way of thinking.  As the enduring adage goes, “Prevention is better than the cure.”

So, when exactly would be the right time to replace one’s roof then?  We understand that replacing your roof is a hefty investment, so we want to ensure that when you do so, what you spend for will be worth it in the long run.

Here are the indicators you need to look out for to know when replacing your roof should be in your to-do list:

  1. Persistent Leaks – If you start to notice water dripping from up above more than once, then it’s highly possible there’s some holes or other damage to your roof already.  To check for certain where the leaks are coming from, beam up your ceiling with a strong flashlight in the darkness (we’re assuming your home has an attic space) and see where the leak spots are dripping from.  Most often than not, leaks take place in areas of your roof where pipes, flashing, or two roof components are held together.
  2. Light Beams – Same with leaks, light beams that filter into your home also indicate cracks and other damage.  Check during the daytime to see the exact spot in your ceiling where the light beams are coming from.
  3. Cracked, Curled, or Missing Shingles – Step outside of your home and look up to inspect for any obvious signs such as cracks and curlings on the shingles, or any outright bald spots where some shingles used to be.  Any signs of these indicate that it’s time to replace your roof immediately.
  4. Dark Spots or Discoloration – These are 2 common problems that occur especially in locations with high humidity like Hawaii.  These dark spots or discoloration are actually caused by either one or a combination of factors like algae, moss, and mold.  While mainly a cosmetic problem, ignoring this indicator will cause you a much bigger headache in the future especially since these factors will eventually rot your roof in the long term.

Before making any major renovations on your roof on the double, it’s always sound advice to consult with roof repair contractors first so they can assess as to what type of roofing material would be a better replacement, alongside the installation processes needed.

We at Hawaii Metal Roofing Supply can help you with that, as we are the trusted name in metal roof systems in the greater Oahu area.  We will not only guide you through the types of metal roofing material you can choose from, we will also ensure that you’ll have lifetime permanent roofing for your home so you’ll never need to worry about roof repairs or replacements again.
